The verdict
Umami
Best for self-hosting and full data ownership
Umami is open source under MIT and the only option here you can self-host, giving operators direct database access and unlimited retention. It also adds click and scroll heatmaps that Simple Analytics lacks, includes 1M events versus 100k on the same $20 plan, covers 20 sites versus 10, and ships a smaller 2.3 KB script.
Simple Analytics ships an official GA4 import tool and an official WordPress plugin, neither of which Umami offers, easing a move off Google Analytics. Its cloud plan retains data 36 months versus Umami's 24, and it keeps data in the Netherlands within the EU, whereas Umami's cloud runs servers in both the US and EU.
